Bilbao has more than a dozen museums covering various branches of art, science and sports. One of the most important is the renowned Guggenheim Bilbao Museum of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation that was inaugurated on October 19, 1997 and designed by architect Frank Gehry. Another important art gallery is the Bellas Artes Museum, established in 1908 and which includes works from the XII century to the present, focusing primarily on Spanish and Flemish artists. As regards science, the Archaeological, Ethnographic and Historical Basque Museum, is an important art collection that preserves ancient relics and makes presentations concerning the past of the Basque people; also, the Ría de Bilbao Maritime Museum, located on the banks of the river, has in its collection boats and other items related to maritime activity in the region.
